Add someone to your tenancy

Last Updated 27/11/2023

Add someone to your tenancy agreement, and make them a joint tenant

If your tenancy agreement is only in your name, then you have a ‘sole tenancy’. This is still the case, even if you have other people living with you in your home.

In some circumstances, you can ask our permission to add another person to your tenancy.

This changes your tenancy from a sole tenancy into a 'joint' tenancy.

By adding another person to your agreement, you both become jointly responsible for and entitled to the tenancy.

Before you decide

A joint tenancy is not always the best solution for everyone and it’s really important to understand the following before applying for a joint tenancy;

  • Adding someone to your tenancy to create a Joint Tenancy means that they will have the same responsibilities and rights to the tenancy as you, even though the tenancy was yours to begin with. This includes the responsibilities of maintaining your home and ensuring that the rent is paid on time. They may also be able to end the tenancy on your behalf without permission.
  • If we agree to allow you to have a new Joint Tenancy, this may mean that you are given a different type of agreement to what you currently have, this could mean the amount of rent you pay and how often it is paid (weekly/monthly) could change, it could also mean that if you have rent-free weeks that you will no longer have these.
  • Before we grant a new tenancy, we will also review the rent that you pay which may result in an increase
  • Remember that if in the future you decide you would like to change back from a Joint Tenancy to a Sole Tenancy, you would need to request Bromford’s permission again and we are not under any obligation to agree to your request.
  • We recommend that you seek independent or legal advice before proceeding with adding someone to your tenancy.

How to make the request

Sign in to your online account and use the button on this page to let Bromford know you would like to add someone to your tenancy.

After you’ve told us, your neighbourhood coach will review your request.

If you don't have an online account, you can register for an account or speak to your neighbourhood coach.
